Reel Life December 2024 - Taranaki

Successful Anger at the 2024 Stratford Kids Fishing event

River flows are currently receding towards their summer lows, but a fresh on 9th December has ensured most remain in great condition for angling, with relatively little streambed algal buildup so far. While the ring plain is currently in a 3-day southeasterly blow, weather conditions will improve as we head towards Christmas.

For the fly fisher, targeting trout on their feeding lies with #14-16 hare & copper or halfback nymphs, or green beetle will be the way to go. Spin or soft bait fishing in the pools and deeper runs should also bring success.

Lake Rotomanu – Still worth a visit

Following the recent Lake Rotomanu kids fishing event, there are still plenty of trout and perch in the lake, so it is well worth heading down to target them – proven methods for catching trout and perch in Rotomanu include spinning with Black and Gold Tobys, soft baiting with colourful patterns, and bait fishing off the bottom with a wiggly worm.

Stratford kids fishing event

Our Stratford kids fishing day was held on Saturday the 14th December at the Stratford Scout Den pool, King Edward Park. There was a great turnout of parents and kids with plenty of rainbows landed and some beautiful sunny weather.

Those that didn’t manage to catch a fish enjoyed a sausage from the barbeque and a chocolate fish or two – a huge thank you to everyone who showed up, and a particular thanks to The Stratford Fishing Club, Stratford Lions, and the Taranaki Electricity Trust, for making this event possible.

372 rainbows were released for the event with plenty of them still residing in the Scout Den Pool or in nearby reaches, so it is worthwhile taking your kids down to try catch a few! Kids under 12 can get a whole season license free of charge via the Fish and Game website (but please remember to only carry one rod per license holder).
