Reel Life November 2024 - Taranaki

There’s been a mixed bag of weather recently for the Taranaki Region with periods of warmer, settled weather being disrupted by fast moving fronts moving up from the South Island, or in from the Tasman to the west.

These fronts have been creating short, but concentrated rainfall events temporarily increasing river flows and discoloration, with local anglers following regional forecasts closely to spot windows of calmer weather and flows to get out for a cast. Aside from the variable springtime weather, this hasn’t prevented anglers throughout the region from catching some great, representative fish using a variety of methods including spinning, soft baits, and on the fly.

Lake Rotomanu – Worth a Visit

Thanks to all those who attended our annual Lake Rotomanu kids fishing event that was held on Sunday the 3rd of November. It was a great day filled with sunshine and young anglers with proud catches. A huge thanks also to the Inglewood Rod, Hunting & Clay Target Club, Hynds New Plymouth, and Hunting and Fishing Taranaki for making this all possible.

There are still plenty of trout in the lake, so it is well worth heading down to target them – proven methods for catching trout in Rotomanu include spinning with Black and Gold Tobys, soft baiting with colourful patterns, and bait fishing off the bottom (worms are very desirable for the resident fish).

A happy young Angler at the 2024 Rotomanu Kids Fishing Event

Upcoming – Stratford kids fishing event

Our Stratford kids fishing day is coming up on Saturday the 14th December at the Stratford Scout Den pool, King Edward Park.

This is another great opportunity to introduce junior anglers to the world of fishing and give them a good chance for some action. Please note that all levels of ability are more than welcome here, so if your child has caught many fish, or if they have never held a rod, come on down and our staff and volunteers will see you right.

The day runs from 8am-1pm, and will be split into 15-minute, reservable time slots to give everyone their own dedicated timeframe to catch a fish (or two!). To reserve one of these 15-minute slots for your child, please call the Stratford I-Site on 0800 765 6708 and they will assist.
