Reel Life September 2020

Northlands Trout Liberations

In early September Northland Fish and Game completed its annual trout liberations.

There has been an increase of angler pressure especially in the accessible Whau Valley Dam.

So accordingly we have increased our stocking rate to Whau Valley, Wilsons Dam, and Lake Manuwai.

This will ensure that there are good numbers of fish to catch in these fisheries.

Kai Iwi lakes fishing competition

Due to the uncertainties of COVID we have decided to cancel the Kai Iwi lakes fishing competition for 2020.

However the lakes are producing good fish and reports of several rainbows over the 2kg mark being landed.

Above Right: A nice fat fish from the Kai Iwi lakes.

Rivers and Streams

Our rivers and streams have taken a battering over the last 12 months with record low flows during the summer to major flooding events this winter.

On recent inspection the water conditions have returned to normal and flows have stabilised.

It is definitely worth a look in the upper reaches early in the season before the water temperatures warm up too much.

Take the Family Fishing

The new season commences on the 1st October 2020, the family licence is by far the best value for money licence on offer.

A family licence can be made up of two parents or grandparents and up to four of their children or grandchildren under the age of 18.

It is excellent value for money, this licence can also be used anywhere in NZ, except the Lake Taupo fishery which is managed by the Department of Conservation.
