Taranaki Reel Life August 2018

While the region has generally had lots of rain this winter, it’s been regular and not as major flood flows, so Taranaki fisheries should all be in very good condition for the new season.
This is also reflected in that anglers who have been fishing below the winter limits recently have caught some great fish.
Right: Happy young angler at an earlier Taranaki kids fish out.
This season we are also expecting the Manganuioteao River near Raetihi to finally be back close to its pre-October 2013 quality as it recovers from this very major flood.
For those who aren't in the know, the Manganuioteao supports a nationally significant fishery for brown and rainbow trout, averaging 1.5kg.
The level of angling use is low by national standards and there are always good fishing areas available in very scenic surroundings.
Daytime nymphing with weighted flies is recommended. Add spilt shot to your leader to get down to the fish.
Dry fly fishing is favoured for the evening rise.
For spin fishing, use larger bright spinners if the water is discoloured and fine lines and small spinners when the river is slow in summer.
Kids fish outs – don’t miss out
Taranaki is holding children’s events at Lake Ngangana near Waitara, and at Opunake Lake on October 27 and also at the Scout den pool on the Patea River in the heart of Stratford on December 8.
Parents and caregivers, this is your chance to give kids a taste for trout fishing under expert supervision. Be sure to book as these events are very popular.
