Both Barrels May 2025 - North Canterbury

Opening Weekend Wrap-Up

Opening weekend is behind us, and what a start to the season it was! The week leading up to May 3rd brought heavy rainfall across the North Canterbury Region. Paddocks turned to ponds and lowland rivers spilled into surrounding areas, making access to many Maimai’s a real challenge.

But as any seasoned hunter knows, adaptability is key. Those who braved the high-water levels and adjusted their plans were rewarded. Reports over the past two weeks suggest steady bird numbers and successful hunts throughout the region. Feedback from local hunters has been overwhelmingly positive—there are birds about, you just have to work for them!

As seems to be tradition lately, the weather on opening weekend didn’t do us any favours. Once again, calm conditions and a lack of wind made it tough to bring ducks into range, especially over the now overflowing lakes and flooded paddocks. Decoy spreads were less effective without a breeze to help them look convincing—but that’s hunting for you.

Compliance Activity

Our team, alongside dedicated honorary rangers, were out in force across both public and private land conducting compliance checks. Over the two days, 87 hunters were inspected.

We’re pleased to report a drop in the non-compliance rate, sitting around 10% this year. However, one concerning issue continues to surface—lead shot being used over water. This regulation has been in place for 20 years under the Wildlife Act. There’s simply no excuse in 2025. Modern steel shot is highly effective and readily available. Let’s protect the future of our sport by doing it right.

Looking Ahead – More Hunting to Be Had!

The season is still young, and there’s plenty more to look forward to! The first pheasant weekend is just around the corner—a perfect time to try your hand at some upland game hunting. Keep your ears open and your eyes peeled for quail while you’re at it.

Heading onto the braided rivers? Be sure to scan for ducks roosting on the river. River hunting can be a real thrill and incredibly rewarding with the right approach.
