The 2026/27 Sports Fishing Season is Underway
The 2026/27 freshwater sports fishing season opened on 1 October, with encouraging fishing reports coming in from across the West Coast. Anglers have been making the most of the early-season opportunities, with good fishing reported in the middle and lower reaches of larger rivers, alongside productive fishing across the region’s lakes.

Trout are in good condition in our lakes, with spring rainfall creating good feeding opportunities and helping fish regain condition following spawning over winter. Perch fishing has also been particularly good in Lakes Mahinapua and Kaniere. Salmon have been encountered in good numbers in Lakes Kaniere and Ianthe, which is encouraging to see following recent releases.
The West Coast offers a range of fishing opportunities throughout the season, with options available in most conditions. When heavy rain pushes rivers into flood, the lakes can provide excellent alternatives, meaning there is often somewhere to fish regardless of the weather. Anglers are encouraged to explore different fisheries, keep an eye on local conditions, and make the most of the opportunities across the region.

With positive reports coming in from across the region, the season is off to a promising start. Whether fishing a back country river, targeting perch and salmon in the lakes, or exploring other local fisheries, there are plenty of opportunities to get outdoors and enjoy West Coast freshwater fishing.
Planning your next fishing trip? Check out the West Coast Fish & Game online access maps to find fishing locations, public access points and boat ramps across the region. The maps are a handy tool for planning your next outing or discovering somewhere new to fish. For more information on using the maps and saving them to your phone, take a look at last month’s Reel Life newsletter.
Anglers are reminded to hold a current 2026/27 sports fishing licence and check the relevant fishing regulations before heading out.
